The Los Angeles Police
Department &
the Autism Society of America- Los Angeles
announce a new
Autism Awareness Program
Volunteers needed to provide
Autism Awareness training
for LAPD officers
The Los Angeles Police
Department (LAPD) and the Autism Society of America- Los Angeles
Chapter (ASA-LA) have partnered to develop an Autism Awareness
Roll Call Training Program targeted to LAPD officers. Volunteers
from the Los Angeles area autism
community will present key information about autism spectrum
disorders during roll call briefings in October and November, 2007.
Families and members of the
community touched by autism will visit all 19 stations,
personalizing autism to assist officers in their response to this
growing population. Officers will increase their ability to
recognize the features of autism spectrum disorders, draw upon
relevant intervention techniques, and know resources for more
information.
The project organizers,
Detective Gil Escontrias of the LAPD Detective Support and Vice
Division, Crisis Support Section, Mental Evaluation Unit (MEU) and
Emily Iland, M.A., and Caroline Wilson, R.N, BSN of the Autism
Society of America- Los Angeles, invite volunteers from the
community to be trained to present the autism awareness program.
Volunteers may reside anywhere
but must be available to visit one or more of the 19 LAPD stations.
Training sessions including all necessary materials and coaching
will be provided. To volunteer, or for more information, call
562-804-5556 ext 2.
